The Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler are the top two models for off-road vehicles. Ask almost any off-road enthusiast, whether they are into camping, hiking, or just the great outdoors in general, you can count on them to at least include the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco in their top five list, if not top two list.
It’s easy to see why many off-road enthusiasts prefer these two makes and models. They both boast superior engines and rugged looks that are most suitable for an all-terrain truck or pick-up. If you’re looking for a vehicle that can withstand anything and everything that Mother Nature can throw its way, you would be hard-pressed to find models besides these two.
With all that said though, the automotive industry never stands still. When it comes to toughness and ruggedness, there is a new competitor that’s turning a lot of heads. I am of course talking about the 2021 GMC Electric Hummer.
As you probably already know, the Hummer is originally designed for combat situations. It is very boxy, well-armored and its engine can withstand a tremendous amount of stress and pressure. Unsurprisingly, it’s the natural pick for off-road use and has quite a bit of pedigree as far as brand recognition is concerned.
Well, it’s 2021 and the GMC Electric Hummer released for the fall of 2021 is, by all indications, very serious about the off-road market. This model is the first electric super truck of its kind. Electric cars, as you can probably tell with the rise of Tesla, are causing a lot of excitement in the automotive world.
Many consumers like the environmental aspect of electric cars. Others are also excited about this class of vehicles because of their performance upgrades over the past few years. Well, electric vehicles in the world of off-roading are no longer the stuff of theory.
Thanks to the 2021 GMC Electric Hummer, you can do your part in helping protect the environment from your neck of the woods while at the same time looking awesome in an off-road vehicle designed from the ground up to deliver results.
It’s not a surprise that when this vehicle got announced, it pretty much sucked out the oxygen in the off-road vehicle space. People are waiting if the 2021 GMC Electric Hummer can deliver on the hype.
It’ll be known as the Hummer EV and is the newest star in the GMC lineup. It is a General Motors product so you best believe that it has the full power and backing of General Motors manufacturing infrastructure spread throughout the United States as well as supply chain countries.
This model highlights the fact that GMC is serious about electric trucks and has designed this model with all the bells and whistles that you would expect from a serious off-road contender. What kind of power are we looking at?
Well, this model is an electric pickup truck with a three-motor engine that produces 1,000 horsepower. The truck’s all-wheel drive can take you from zero to sixty miles per hour in all three seconds.
When it comes to torque, this model isn’t playing around. We’re talking about an 11,500-pound per square foot power train.
What About the Battery?
Of course, anyone who’s been around any kind of electric vehicle knows that the Achilles’ heel or weak point of such a vehicle is the battery. General Motors has not been sleeping on the job and uses its new Ultium battery pack technology for this model.
This technology is turning a lot of heads because it can charge 350 kilowatts in a relatively short period. Per charge, the driving range of each off-road vehicle is good for up to 350 miles. When it comes to the interior, it offers tremendous space.
It also enables you to remove the roof so if you’re looking for a panoramic glass roof, this model delivers. It also has 13.4-inch info and entertainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel display.
Whether you have an Apple iOS or Android mobile device, this model has your wireless connectivity covered. Finally, this model also has an autopilot feature so it can go into an auto cruising mode and drive itself. On top of that, it has a long list of safety features.
The 2021 Ford Bronco
While the GMC Electric Hummer definitely delivers when it comes to electric vehicle features, the 2021 Ford Bronco continues its long pedigree of delivering an awesome off-road experience. Not only does the base model feature a 2.3-liter turbo I4 engine, but you also have an option to upgrade to a 2.7-liter turbo V-6 engine.
Its base engine has basic horsepower output of 270 and delivers 310 pounds per square foot of torque. The 2.7-liter version can give you 310 horsepower and 400 pounds per square foot of torque.
Both engine options are available in 10-speed automatic transmission as well as 7-speed manual transmission option. The length of the Bronco comes in at 190.5 inches and the wheelbase is 116.1 inches.
The base model has 3,500 pounds of towing capacity and has a payload capacity of 1,370 pounds. For crawl ratios, the manual transmission of the Ford Bronco has 94.7 to 1 and the automatic transmission has a ratio of 67.8:1.
How Does the Jeep Wrangler Model Measure Up?
The Jeep Wrangler base model features a 3.6-liter V-6 engine and an optional upgrade to a 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine. If you want to take things to the next level, you can get the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine version.
The 3.6-liter V-6 engine produces 285 horsepower and has a 260 per square foot torque output. It comes in a 6-speed manual transmission and an 8-speed automatic transmission option. The 2.0-liter turbo I4 engine produces 270 horsepower and 295 pounds per square foot of torque. It also comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
All told, the Jeep Wrangler has a very customizable setup and whether you are a big Ford Bronco or Jeep Wrangler fan, you will never run out of ideas on how to customize your Jeep Wrangler. Depending on who you ask and what kind of market options you’re considering, the number of upgrades as well as add-ons that you can put on your basic Jeep Wrangler setup can number in the hundreds.
It’s All About Options
At the end of the day, when comparing the 2021 GMC Electric Hummer versus the 2021 Ford Bronco or Jeep Wrangler, it boils down to what kind of options you’re looking for. Ultimately, you want to focus on the off-road experience.
Of course, the extent of the upgrade and options as well as the add-ons that you put on your vehicle plays a big role in the ultimate experience that you get.
Whether you are a hardcore off-road enthusiast that can’t wait to take your 2021 Ford Bronco and hit the trail no matter how uneven or watery or you can’t wait to use your Jeep Wrangler, please understand that you are dealing with a base vehicular architecture that is intended for that kind of use.
These vehicles can take tremendous punishment so you can enjoy the very best that Mother Nature can offer you as you explore the great outdoors. With that said, if you’re looking for a very high-end piece of electric vehicle technology you might want to take a long, hard look at the Electric Hummer.
While its numbers are very impressive (and it’s really hard to argue with 1,000 horsepower), you also have to look at its overall design. Pay close attention to how practical this option is especially if you’re used to off-road trips that take you as far away from the grid as possible.
Remember that the big downside with any kind of electric vehicle is that you have to plug them in. It doesn’t matter how long their battery life goes because if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, you want automotive technology that is as independent and scalable as possible.
This is the open question with electric vehicles. While they can deliver tremendous performance, at the end of the day, you’re giving up a large amount of your autonomy.
The great thing about the typical off-road vehicle such as the Bronco or the Wrangler is that you can throw yourself out there in the middle of nowhere with no roads or civilization or pavements and still come out on top because that’s the kind of experience these vehicles were designed from the ground up to provide.
With all that said, it’s still an open question whether the 2021 GMC Electric Hummer or any other electric SUV can be up to the job as far as off-roaders’ expectations go.
